Moon Doh

Moon Doh began his tenure as Music Director of the Butler County Symphony Orchestra with the 2025–26 season. Since 2021, he has served as Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where he has conducted subscription, education, family, and film concerts, as well as sold-out performances with artists including Sting, Laufey, and Nas. An active community builder, he has presented Beethoven’s string quartets in libraries across Pittsburgh, hosted Discovery and Drinks talks in local breweries, and led children’s concerts at venues including MuseumLab in collaboration with Mo Willems.

Prior to his Pittsburgh appointment, Moon served as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Flora Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, Germany. During his tenure, he launched the orchestra’s first live-stream concert series, expanding its reach to audiences around the world. Alongside subscription performances, he worked closely with music educators to create meaningful opportunities for young people to engage with orchestral music.

Moon has worked with orchestras throughout Europe, including the WDR Funkhausorchester, Duisburger Philharmoniker, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Bergische Symphoniker, and Dortmunder Philharmoniker in Germany; the Romanian Chamber Orchestra; the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra in Spain; Sinfonietta Cracovia in Poland; and the Pleven Philharmonic in Bulgaria. Recent U.S. engagements include debuts with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Syracuse Orchestra, and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.

Born in South Korea, Moon spent much of his childhood in the Philippines, Russia, and the United States. He began studying cello and piano at age nine while living in Russia and later performed with youth and student orchestras internationally. Deeply committed to developing young artists, he has conducted Germany’s Hessen All-State Orchestra, served as conductor of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf’s Under-16 Orchestra, and regularly coached the Youth Orchestra of Essen. He continues this work today through educational and artistic partnerships with high school and collegiate ensembles across the greater Pittsburgh region.

Beyond the concert hall, Moon has worked with asylum seekers in Hungary, children in underserved communities in Bangladesh, and inmates in Baltimore. While at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a B.A. in International Relations and Economics, he led student initiatives focused on community engagement and service. He also served on the board of Violence Prevention Network USA, an organization supporting individuals at risk of radicalization.

A recipient of the Takaya Urakawa Foundation Grant for promising young musicians, Moon studied orchestral conducting at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf after earning a B.A. in Music Composition from Sahmyook University in South Korea. He has participated in distinguished festivals including the Accademia Chigiana in Italy and the Bartók Festival in Hungary. His mentors include Manfred Honeck, Rüdiger Bohn, and Peter Eötvös.

Being an avid athlete—whether rollerblading, playing tennis, squash, or soccer—I look forward to connecting with members of the community on the fields, courts, and beach boardwalks. A perfectly made cortado always brightens my day. In fact, searching for the perfect cortado has become a lifelong adventure that I share with my wife, Shauna. (We even got engaged over a cortado at our favorite café in Brooklyn!)
