Yu Liu
Yu Liu is an internationally acclaimed pipa artist. She was born into a family of musicians in Changsha, China. When her mother introduced her to the pipa at the age of eight, she immediately developed a special interest in its music. She excelled as a top contestant and entered the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, majoring in pipa performance. Upon graduation, she was recruited as a leading pipa performer in the National Chinese Music Orchestra. Liu was the winner of the 1989 Art Cup International Competition of Chinese Musical Instruments. Since then, she was frequently invited to play in the Beijing Concert Hall and national TV concerts. She represented China for sharing her music on many occasions including international music festivals in Germany, Singapore, and the United States.

Liu arrived in the United States in 1991, not only to continue her musical career but to explore broader stages and opportunities. She continued to perform her music with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Southern Utah Orchestra, etc. She has recorded soundtracks for hundreds of TV episodes with Warner Brothers such as Kung Fu as well as for the movie Pavilion of Women with Universal Pictures and TV series Kung Fu Panda with Nickelodeon, Recently she worked with Disney on the TV show Our Flowing Dream and the animated film Mulan by Disney. as well as with Riot on recording music for League of Legends. Her music also appeared on the national NBC channel Good Morning Sunday show, and she played the national anthem at the opening ceremony of an NBA basketball game at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. In 2003 she was invited by composer Missa Johnouchi to record a CD Kuge, an Erhu and Pipa concerto with the Paris National Opera Orchestra in France. Most recently she was invited by composer Jeremy Zuckerman as a soloist to perform in Avatar The Last Airbender world premiere concert at Royal Festival Hall in London and Paris.

Liu has been invited by many universities such as Caltech, Callifornia State University, Los Angeles, Southern Utah University, etc, to introduce and showcase Chinese music and instruments for world music classes. Liu’s passion and dedication to music has earned her worldwide recognition.
